Your pregnancy reveal doesn’t have to be perfect.
My first pregnancy was a wild ride from the get-go. Six weeks in, and I still had no clue. I was living my life, then BAM! I’m finding out I’m pregnant. It wasn’t a movie moment. It was a punch to the gut, followed by a long, drawn-out, “What the f**?”*
If you’re feeling a wave of Postpartum Panic (or prenatal shock) before the baby is even here, you aren’t a bad mom. You’re a human being processing a life-altering shift.

The Moment the Test Flashed ‘Pregnant’
I remember pacing the bathroom, cursing up a storm. “This can’t be real.” When I told my partner, I skipped the sugarcoating. I sat him down, apologized for being a mess, and handed him the stick.
He looked at it. Then me. Then the test. There was no jumping for joy, just a long, silent pause. He eventually smiled, but he wouldn’t put the test down. I really wanted to say, “You know that has pee on it, right? Lol.”
The “No Feelings” Phase
When he asked how I felt, I was honest: I had no feelings. My mind was racing finances, plans, and a family trip to Jamaica I was about to take (and keep a secret for 3.5 months!). We talked for hours that night; honest, raw, and terrified. This was the beginning of my journey into Postpartum Detachment, though I didn’t know it yet.
When he asked how I felt, I was honest I told him I had no feelings My mind was racing – finances, plans, the Jamaica trip I was about to take with my family. (We didn’t tell anyone until 3.5 months, so that trip was… intense). In any case, we talked for hours that night, honest, raw, terrified. It was the start of something I had no idea how to navigate. This first-time pregnancy experience was nothing like a fairytale.”
3 Things I Learned About the “Shock” Phase
The Amygdala Hijack Starts Early: That “panic” you feel? That’s your brain’s fight-or-flight response kicking in because your entire world just shifted. It’s physiological, not a character flaw.
Validation Over Performance: You don’t owe anyone a “happy” reaction. If you feel numb, let yourself feel numb.
Communication is Protection: Talking for hours that night protected our relationship. It kept the panic from turning into a wall between us..
