Let’s talk baby registries, shall we? The truth is, there’s no single “right” way to create a baby registry, and honestly, you can skip half the gadgets out there. When I was expecting my first, my brain felt like it was about to short-circuit trying to figure out what we actually needed. Everyone throws their “must-haves” and “definitely don’ts” at you, and frankly, it’s overwhelming. It took me a good couple of months to even finish mine because I was so annoyed and bogged down.
But then I had an epiphany: I’m doing this my way. We don’t need the most expensive everything, and the baby definitely doesn’t need that. I decided to put on our registry what we truly wanted, and that’s that. I wasn’t about to add things I knew would just collect dust or end up being returned. And if I’m being completely honest, I really wish people would stick to the registry! We didn’t spend hours agonizing over it for someone to just buy whatever random thing they felt like. (Just keeping it real here.)
Baby Registry Strategy: Where to Even Begin
So, where do you even start with this whole baby registry thing? My first piece of advice? Don’t feel chained to just ONE registry! Different stores offer different perks and varying selections. Honestly, I only ended up with two because I was just over the whole process and wanted something convenient for everyone. I specifically made registries at places that offered those sweet free mom packages when you created a registry with them. (Think Amazon and Target – those freebies are a nice little bonus!)
Alright, enough of this. Let’s get down to what you are actually looking for. What to put on the list. I’ve broken them down into categories and some honest thoughts.
Sleep Space: Creating a Safe Haven
- Crib/Bassinet: You absolutely need a safe place for your baby to sleep. A solid, safe crib or bassinet is key.
- Mattress & Sheets: A few fitted sheets are non-negotiable. (Spit-ups happen)
- Swaddles/Sleep Sacks: These are more a personal preference in my opinion. There are so many options out there. Just add a few and gradually change as your baby changes. My son hated being swaddled around 2.5 months.
- Baby Camera: I love the ones that connect straight to Wi-Fi without needing an account—simple and hassle-free. This is the one I use and absolutely love. this is an affiliate link, which means I may earn a small commission if you decide to purchase—at no extra cost to you! I only share things I truly love and use myself.
Feeding Items for Your Baby Registry: Fueling Your Little One
- Bottles: These are a total trial-and-error situation. So, I’d recommend only adding a couple different ones to see which ones your baby likes. Even if you’re planning to breastfeed exclusively, having some on hand might be helpful.
- Burp Clothes: Absolute must-have. You can start small and gradually increase your stash.
- Nursing Pillow (if breastfeeding): This is just to make things a little more comfortable for you. I personally used a Boppy, and it worked just fine. Don’t feel pressured to get the most expensive one.
- Breast Pump & Supplies: Here’s a pro tip: Check your insurance! They may cover a breast pump for you. Mine did, and it was a huge help. But keep in mind, you can typically only choose from the options they provide.
- Bibs: Start with a few. You’ll accumulate more as you go. There are tons of different kinds- Some with Velcro, some that snap, tie etc. Just try a few to see what you like.
Diaper Duty Essentials for Your Baby Registry
- Diapers: Start with Newborn and Size 1. Seriously, everyone seems to forget size 1! Not every newborn fits into newborn diapers, so a variety is smart. You’ll figure out your preferred brand as you go.
- Diaper Pail: Some people swear by these. I personally never purchased one. The idea of having to constantly buy specific bags just seems like too much. I used a cheap trash can from the dollar store specifically for diapers and just took it out once it was full. Less money you have to spend.
- Diaper Rash Cream: A good essential to have on hand for those inevitable breakouts. Baby skin can be so sensitive.
- Changing Pads & Cover: I’m just adding this because some people like to have a designated area for diaper changes. Honestly, I changed my baby wherever I happened to be! Those early morning changes? No way was I getting out of bed if I didn’t have to!
Getting Around: Get Out and Enjoy the Sun
- Infant Car Seat: This is NON-NEGOTIABLE. Please get the one that you feel comfortable with and fits your car properly. Speaking of getting ready for the big day, have you started packing your hospital bag? You can find my complete Hospital Bag Checklist here for all the essentials you’ll want to have on hand.
- Stroller: Another non-negotiable in my opinion. Think about your lifestyle-do you need something compact, a travel system, or more rugged for outdoor adventures. I person brought a bassinet/stroller, so it grows with the baby.
- Baby Carrier (wrap, sling, etc.): Absolutely fantastic for keeping your baby close and your hands free.
Bath Time & Skin Care
- Bathtub: A simple one works just fine. You’re still going to have to lift them. You can upgrade once they get bigger/mobile.
- Washcloths/Towels: A few will do to start. You can always grab more later. Personally, I ended up just using our regular adult towels because those baby towels, they’re cute but never seem to dry their skin well enough for me.
- Lotion and any skin care: Go fragrance-free and start small. You’ll need to see what works best for your baby’s skin.
Clothing (They Grow Fast)
- Onesies: A staple! Start with the size you think your child will be. They typically start with preemie, newborn, and 0-3 months sizes. I personally added mostly 0-3 months.
- Sleepers: I despised the button-up pajamas. In my opinion, they make nighttime diaper changes a nightmare. They have pajamas with two-way zippers. They are amazing!
- Socks: They tend to lose these mysteriously. Add a decent amount but don’t go overboard.
- Consider the Season: Just think practical about the clothing you’ll need based on the time of year your baby is due, and any other clothing accessories you might want.
Things You Might Want to Hold Off On (Just My Opinion)
- Too many newborn clothes: Seriously, they outgrow them so fast! Just stick to the essentials. Unless you plan on having your baby changing clothes every day.
- Fancy Shoe Collections: Adorable, yes, but is it practical for a newborn who isn’t walking? Not so much.
- Tons of Toys: For a Newborn? They really only need you and a safe place to sleep in those early days. You can buy toys later as they become more interactive.
- Wipe Warmer: Just a personal preference, but definitely not a necessity in my book.
- Expensive Gadgets: Honestly, just wait and see what your baby actually likes and needs. You don’t want to end up with an unused pricey item.
So, there you have it – my honest and hopefully helpful take on creating your baby registry. Remember, this is your baby registry, so fill it with what feels right for you and your family. Don’t let anyone pressure you into adding things you don’t want or need. Focus on the essentials, prepare for the unexpected (hello, mountains of laundry!), and try to enjoy this incredible journey.
