Okay, so we’re diving into the nitty-gritty of what actually goes into Hospital Bag Essentials. Not the Pinterest-perfect, curated list, but the real-deal, from one mom who’s been there. Remember when I said I started packing three months early? Yeah, that was a sign of my anxiety, not my organization skills. Read about how I found out I was pregnant here!
Let’s get real, you want comfort, practicality, and maybe a little bit of sanity when you’re headed to the hospital. So, here’s what I packed, and why – all fitting into one duffel bag, because ain’t nobody got time for a whole luggage set. When thinking about Hospital Bag Essentials, comfort is key.
Hospital Bag Essentials for comfort:
- Forget the Fancy Robe: Seriously, ditch it. You’ll want the softest, most forgiving clothes you own. Think old t-shirts, comfy pants, or even those super-soft, stretchy dresses. Comfort is QUEEN here.
- Socks (Real Socks): Okay, yes, the hospital gives you those grippy socks. But let’s be real, they’re “hospital quality.” Which means… not great. Your feet will probably get cold, and you deserve better.
- Slippers (That Aren’t Slippery): If you’re not vibing with the hospital socks, bring your own slippers. Comfy, but not slippery – you don’t want to fall when you’re going to the bathroom or taking those mandatory post-birth walks. Plus, let’s be honest, who wants to walk into a hospital bathroom with the same socks they just laid in bed with? Eww.
- Nursing Bra: If you plan on breastfeeding, or even if you just want some extra comfort, a good nursing bra is a must.
Personal Items Essentials: (Because Sanity Matters):
- Towel & Rags (Don’t Be Like Me, Remember the Towel!): Okay, confession time: I forgot my towel. And those tiny hospital towels? Might as well dry off with a hand towel. Do yourself a favor and bring a nice, big, soft towel. You’ll thank me when you’re wrapping yourself up after that first shower. And bring rags, those small towels are great for postpartum cleanup.
- Pillow (Optional, But Highly Recommended): Yes, it takes up space. But trust me, it can be worth it. Hospital pillows are… well, flat and sad. Trying to get comfortable on those things to me was just not working.
- Lip Balm/Lip Gloss (Lifesaver!): If you hate licking chapped lips as much as I do, this is a must-have.
- Hair Ties/Headbands (Get That Hair Out of Your Face!): Whether you’re rocking a messy bun or a full-on glam look, you’ll want your hair out of your face. I kept my hair up the whole time.
- Your Own Soap (No Hospital Soap, Please!): I didn’t want that generic, hospital-grade shampoo/body wash. I wanted my silky-smooth, good-smelling body wash. That first shower after delivery? You want to feel as clean and as much like yourself as possible.
- Lotion (Dry Skin’s Worst Enemy): Simple! You do not want dry skin.
- Blanket: Please, bring a soft blanket. I forgot mine, and had to have my mom bring me one. It’s cold in those rooms, and those thin hospital blankets? Just… no. I was practically begging for ten of them to feel comfortable.
- Underwear (Maternity): Ehh, this is optional, but I didn’t bring any because I used what the hospital gave me. Hell, I’m paying for it. Maternity underpants can get expensive depending on the material you want. I’m bleeding, just give me something. So, I made sure they kept my underwear drawer stocked. Every bathroom visit, I’d change.
- Peri Bottle: My hospital provided one, But seriously, this thing is essential. You just birthed a human, and you can’t exactly scrub down there. Hello, stitches! (Yeah, I had a second-degree tear, so I’m talking from experience.) This bottle will keep you clean and comfortable. Trust me on this one. If you’re preparing for the fourth trimester, read about my postpartum recovery essentials here.
- Pads: I didn’t bring any because I used what the hospital provided as well. They’re… substantial. And honestly, when you’re dealing with postpartum bleeding, substantial is what you want. If you’re particular about your brand or want something super absorbent, bring a whole bag. You’ll go through them. Like, a lot
- Ice Pads: You just pushed a baby out. Things are going to be sore. I also used the disposable ones the hospital provided, and I HIGHLY recommend them. They’re cold, they’re soothing, and they’re exactly what your nether regions need after childbirth. Don’t skip these. Seriously
Section 3: Baby Bag Essentials:
- Going-Home Outfit: I honestly only packed two or three comfortable outfits. Newborn or 0-3 months. Babies can be surprisingly big or small. So, variety is good.
- Swaddle: Yes, the hospital will swaddle your baby, but it’s in those thin hand towels, lol. So, they use two or three. Heck naw, I wanted my baby comfortable, so I had them swaddle him in the swaddle blanket I brought.
- Car Seat: Please make sure it’s properly installed before going to the hospital. Before I left, the nurse came down with us and made sure he was safely buckled in, and the car seat was correct.
Section 4: Other Essentials:
- Snacks and Drinks: If you are breastfeeding HONEY, you need the snacks.
- Phone Charger: A long phone charger is a must!
